All insects with complete metomorphosis start out as an egg, hatch into a larvae, go into a pupa, then emerge as an adult. In complete metomorphosis the larvae and the adult look completly different. This is because they always have a pupa stage were the biggest transformation happens. An insect has to have the pupa stage in order to be an insect with a complete metomorphosis.
